Why Idiomaniak

Already using an English app? Check if it does what Idiomaniak does.

Duolingo, Speak, Babbel and Busuu are built for the whole world and teach lots of languages. Idiomaniak teaches only English, and only to Polish speakers. That's why everything is tailored to them, from the grammar explanations to the very mistakes Poles tend to make.

Made for Poles

We explain grammar in Polish, in full sentences, and warn you about the mistakes Poles typically make: I have 15 years → I'm 15.

A PDF coursebook for every module

Pass a module test and download your own printable coursebook: lessons, grammar, an episode of Idiomaniak's Adventures and exercises on paper. A free account is all you need.

Experimental

Screen-free mode

For walks, runs or cooking. The app talks, you answer out loud. Say “repeat” or “stop” without touching your phone.

A test after every module

Every module ends with a test, plus a review exam covering the last three. Questions you get wrong keep coming back until you've nailed them.

Reviews at just the right moment

The FSRS algorithm brings a word back right around when it starts slipping your mind. Review less, remember more.

A year of learning for PLN 149.90

That's about PLN 0.41 a day. At launch, your first year costs PLN 99.90 if you buy by 31 January 2027. You can start lessons for free, even without an account.

How it works

Learning designed to stick

Every part of the course has its own job. Here's what the Idiomaniac method is built on.

Series

You learn through a story

Nine seasons with the same characters: a move to London, a trip to Paris, a job at a start-up. New words turn up in the scenes where they're needed and come back in later episodes.

Grammar

You work out the rule yourself

First you see a few examples and say what you notice about them. Then you get the rule on a single screen, written in Polish in full sentences.

Traps

We help you avoid the mistakes Polish speakers often make

We show you where Polish points you the wrong way: false friends, word order, tenses. The wrong form is always shown crossed out, so it doesn't stick in your memory.

Phrases

Whole phrases, not single words

You learn ready-made expressions such as ‘Could I have…, please?’ that you can use straight away in a café, at work or in a message to a friend.

Reviews

Reviews at just the right moment

The FSRS algorithm schedules a review of each word at roughly the point when you start to forget it. Words you already know well come back less often, and trickier ones more often.

Speaking

You speak from day one

You read aloud and talk to the characters. The app listens and colours in the words it recognised. In voice mode you can practise without touching your phone, for example while you're out for a walk.

Testing

A test that shows what's stuck

After each module you take a test, followed by a review exam covering the last three modules. Any questions you get wrong come back in later exams.

Variety

Over 60 types of exercise

Dictations, crosswords, conversations, sorting, error detective, karaoke and lots more. The formats change often, so it's hard to get bored.

One module, step by step

From an episode to your own coursebook

Every module ends with an ‘I can…’ task, so you know exactly what you can already say in English.

  1. 1EpisodeA scene from the series, with audio
  2. 2WordsNew phrases in context
  3. 3RuleGrammar explained in Polish
  4. 4ExercisesSeveral different formats

Learning path

From your first ‘Hello’ to easy conversation

Nine stages arranged according to the CEFR, the European scale of language levels. You can start from zero or take a placement test and begin at the stage that suits you.

Send a friend a challenge link and see which of you passes the test first time.

More than just lessons

Adventures, a word jar and a joke to get you going

Idiomaniak's Adventures

Every module comes with a short story to listen to and read. The story runs through the whole course, and the text lights up as the narrator reads.

Word jar

Every new word goes into your jar. You can watch your collection grow and go back to the examples whenever you like.

A joke to get you going

Every module opens with a real joke from whichever country the main character is in at the time. It's a good warm-up before you start learning.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to create an account?

No. Lessons work without an account and without giving any personal data at all. A free account also gets you PDF coursebooks, friends, the league and challenges. You can create an account from age 13; younger users need a parent's consent, confirmed by email.

I don't know my level. Where should I start?

You can start from zero or take a short placement test. The test will show you which stages you already know and where it's best to begin.

How long does a lesson take?

Lessons are short, designed so you can do one during a break, on the bus or in the evening. What matters most is learning regularly, so the app reminds you to study at a time you choose.

Does the app work offline?

The mobile app (coming soon to the App Store and Google Play) works offline. Audio for levels A2 and up is downloaded once, when you reach those levels. The browser version needs an internet connection.

Which English will I learn?

British English, because the series is mostly set in London. Along the way, we also point out the key differences between British and American English.

Who reads the dialogues?

The dialogues are read by synthetic voices. Before publication, every recording is checked by a speech recognition system that compares it with the script. Recordings that don't pass the check are corrected and generated again.

Can I cancel a paid plan?

Yes, at any time. You keep access to the paid part of the course until the end of the period you've paid for.

When will the app be on the App Store and Google Play?

Soon. For now, you can learn in your browser on a computer, tablet or phone.

Time for a new superpower!
